What is an Intimacy Designer?

TLDR: An Intimacy Designer is a holistic, interdisciplinary consultant who can design, support, and direct intimacy to become an integrated playable element in your game. I also trained and have field experience at keeping teams professional while having fun designing sex, intimacy, and romance in the workplace.

I am a SAG trained Intimacy Designer dedicated to advancing and expanding the role of intimacy in video games, XR and VR through interdisciplinary collaboration. As developers have created more  complex romancing systems, players have become eager to role play  highly customizable, responsive, and inclusive  content and characters. And yet, industry is falling behind in the advancement of intimacy design. Studios like Ubisoft and Larian have started bringing Intimacy Coordinators onto their teams, but there is room to grow in this emerging field of game design. An Intimacy Designer is a valuable addition to any studio seeking to create innovative narratives and player experiences.

My role in game design is multifaceted. I collaborate across narrative, design, and art departments to drive  intimacy as essential and  rewarding to game play. Intimacy can go beyond cut scenes, becoming as interactive and challenging as combat or puzzle solving, impacting the story and the player’s advancement through the world. My experience as an Intimacy Coordinator and extensive training in sexual dramaturgy and choreography  put me at the forefront of this changing landscape. I can build sexual tension and weave romance tropes into the narrative and then give clear direction as to how it plays out in the game. I can create branched narratives to empower interaction with the sexual storytelling that is as rich and engaging as a boss combat encounter. I can make intimacy action and state mechanics as intuitive to players as casting magic or fighting a monster. And I can do this across levels of intensity from E rating to A/NR+18.

As a team member in your studio, I am trained to create comfortable work environments where discussing intimacy is as professional as it is exciting. I am the designated expert in the room who can clarify proper vocabulary, answer questions, and develop new ways to think about the sexual storytelling elements of a game. I can also support leadership and keep projects on schedule by creating continuity on this aspect of the game’s development. My SAG Certification through IDC in Intimacy Coordinating means I have received intense training and mentoring in how to manage sexual content in a professional environment, and can work with Legal and HR teams to avoid concerns. More importantly, I enable teams to work confidently and excitedly about expanding the depth of their design.
